Blog 14 - Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Friday, November 7, marks the end of term 1.

How do you feel your first term went?

What are some of the positive points about this first term? What are some of the items you need to work on for the second and third terms? Explain.

  1. I am overall very pleased with my progress and results from the first term. I really enjoyed the in class writing and the blogs because I prefer creative writing. I enjoy weekly homework because it helps me stay organized and plan for the week. I found that once we got started on our chrome books it was much easier to do a lot of the assigned work and collaborate. Collaboration really helped my partner and I in our trailer project. I think that the whole novel and the project along with it was a really interesting and positive point in my term. What I need to work on for the second and third term is my literary paragraph and response writings. I struggled with those a lot more and I need to do a little bit more thinking on that part. Also I would like to improve upon my oral presentations. Even though we only did 2 small ones I would like to be an able to project better and be more confident. This term in English was one of my best and most entertaining yet.

  2. To be completely honest I was unsure if I would enjoy this year in English or not. I got scared when he mentioned that we would be working a lot with technologies and if you were not up to that then you should change classes; let's just say that I'm not technologies biggest fan. To my relief I ended up really liking the chrome books and I would probably say that the unconventional way we use them is what I enjoyed most about this term. I liked how the chrome books allowed us to explore different methods of work, I was used to the boring paper and pen way but this way is much more exciting! Although I am happy with how English class is going there are some things I have to work on. I am not the best at analysing texts or stories. I can read and understand book just fine but I have trouble with the 'why' and 'what does this represent' and all the symbolism and metaphors it comes with. This causes trouble in most essay type writings because I have trouble finding how a certain thing actually had an impact or why it enhanced the story. All and all I am enjoying English class and most of the activities we do and I'm happy with how I'm doing but as they say there is always room for improvement.

    1. I totally feel the same way about technology but in this case it actually ended up making the class better! I was surprised by how much you can really integrate it into your learning and how much more efficient typing is than writing in class. I hope we keep using them throughout the year.

  3. Despite my hesitations and worries at the beginning of the term, overall, I believe that this term went well. This was not your typical English class, but the change and modern twists were definitely refreshing and more interesting from conventional English classes. The idea of using technology in the classroom definitely intimidated me at first, but I came around to liking it. The chrome books were something I had never used before so it took some getting used to, but it was very handy at times and it was a nice change from pencil and paper. In the upcoming terms, I would like to continue to do well in this class and perhaps better familiarize myself with Shakespearean literature, as I have somewhat struggled with it in the past. Overall, this term was definitely a new experience for me but in the end, it was a success.

    1. I completely agree that this is not your typical English class and the technology intimidated me as well. But just like you I found it very usefull and an nice difference.

    2. I also loved how we used the chrome books. It also loved how we do most of our assignments online and not on paper.

  4. I was very excited about English class this year! Usually I am not the biggest fan of English class because of all the writing and reading involved. Although, I have been pleasantly surprised with the use of the chrome books. We have done most of our assignments online and I would take typing on a laptop any day before having to write in pencil because I am so slow at it! I believe that the reason why i enjoy English class so much more than the past years is because this year is not your boring old, sit down and take notes class. We have a fun class and i look forward to spending the rest of the year with all of my classmates. Something I would like to improve in the upcoming terms is to improve on my reading skills and better understanding of texts. Not that I have trouble reading, I just don't enjoy it much so I would like to give it a chance while reading Romeo and Juliette.

    1. I agree that it's a lot more fun and convenient to use the chrome books than to just sit there and write stuff down!

  5. This term was definitely a challenge! At first I found it a bit hard that I had to finish things in a small amount of time! Last year we spent every class reading or discussing a novel and went home with a load of homework or essays to write. As awful as that might sound, I kind of liked it because although everything we did was do that night at midnight online, I was stress free, and able to take time writing it. There was a big adjustment that had to be made for me to get used to the ways of this year's English class! We would just grab our chrome books and start an assignment. Not done by the end of the period? Too bad! I think I've gotten used to it a little more, and appreciate the challenge, but hopefully i'll get a little better at being able to express the words i want to write in a short amount of time. Next term, I know for a fact we will be reading Romeo and Juliette, which i am very much looking forward too! My only worry would be that last year i had a concussion for all of term 2 and missed practically ALL of the Julius Caesar unit. Therefore, i got no practice with the Shakespearean language whatsoever! All in all, I look forward to next term and am satisfied with my work so far.

  6. Overall this term I thought went really well because in all of my subjects I’ve been getting good grades and I also worked really hard in all the classes. The beginning of this term I was doing insane amounts of homework every night because most of my teachers decide to give us loads of it all at the same time and then a month later they all don’t give any homework at all. It really seems like they slam us with all that work all at one time to see who the struggling kids in IB are and also to see the ones who just don’t work. This year’s English class is totally different from last year’s because, last year’s all we did was read and answer questions not to mention the millions of PowerPoints we copied down in our notes. This year I actually enjoy coming to English, part of the reason why is because of our teacher but it’s also that the work we do is actually pretty fun because we get to blog about unique topics that don’t have to be 1000 words long and on top of that you get more than enough time to do them! That’s unheard of with some of the other teachers out there.

    1. Ya, I agree with you on that the homework at the start of the term was a lot. I also think that this year is a lot more fun because we are actually using our brains instead of just mindlessly copying stuff down.

    2. I find it ridiculous that the teachers bombard us with homework all at the same time and then give us nothing. It's unfair for the student because we work so hard, when the teachers can simply just push the due dates.

    3. I agree, I also think that we got so much homework. Especially in math.

  7. This year term one hit me a little harder than the other years. I have found that sec. 2 was a review of sec. 1 and sec. 1 was a review of grade 6. But this year hasn’t been a review of anything. There has been a lot of new stuff and I have found it a bit harder. English however is the best I have had yet. I really like how we use the chrome books and use technology to help us do different assignments. It takes away the boring affect of just sitting in a classroom, reading some texts, and answering questions on them. Some of the things that I think I should work on in the next terms is becoming less shy and participating in class and becoming better at writing essays and stuff. Another thing that I have enjoyed about english this year is the weekly blogs. I really like reading other people’s opinions on things and seeing what other people have to say about mine. Overall I have had a pretty good term!:)

    2. It is so true that the previous years have felt like review, and now it's like a wake up call. I also really like using the chrome books because it's so different than what were used to, like you said it's better than just sitting around in a classroom.

  8. This term has been difficult. Grade nine is so much more harder than grade eight. Last year it was alright to skip some homework or a day of school but this year it's so much harder. This term was pretty good for me in English class though. It wasn't that hard for me and I got very good marks. I'm doing much better in English class than I expected. This class has been really fun and interesting. My favorite part was filming the movie trailer. It was a fun project. The work we have done has not been too difficult for me. Overall, this term has not been that hard and it was fun.

  9. I found that this term went really well. I got decent grades in all of my classes, except Math and French. English last year and this year is a lot different though, last year there was no Chromebooks and a lot more paper. This year we are doing a lot of our work with technologies and I think it is a nice change. I really enjoyed last year in English class and I can't say that I was super excited to switch to technology at the time. It was super fun though once we got started, my favorite thing was the movie trailer and I think that in English I am doing pretty well. So far this year has been a lot harder than last year, but for the most part, this first term was fun and I hope the others are too.

  10. The first term of grade nine has been nothing like I expected. Some of the classes so far have been either easier than last year, or extremely harder. I don't know (and I'm being completely honest) why I was put in high math. Last years math class was fine. I was getting high marks, but nothing remarkable, like 90's and 100's ! This years math class is WAY to hard! My teacher keeps telling us that were learning a year ahead of the other math classes! Also history and geography class is really hard. This year we have a completely different way of writing all the tests, and no matter how hard I try to understand it... it's not happening. First of all my teacher is monotone, and doesn't know how to talk easy french. He uses all of these big french words that I don't know the meaning of ! I know this has been a small rant but school is hard! Luckily I have some easy classes I understand to compensate for the classes that I have no idea what I'm doing in.

  11. I think that term one this year actually went really well. Probably better than last year that’s for sure. This year I've been trying a lot harder than I was last year and it really made a difference but still personal problems had to be faced also. In the beginning I was a little hesitant at the fact that we would be using a lot of technology but it turns out not to be that bad! The trailer project was a lot of fun to do and I hope we get some more similar to it.

  12. Term one was pretty good for me. I really enjoyed the change from paper to computer. It makes english alot more fun. One thing I need to improve upon is my in class writings, all i need to do is to think harder and put more effort into them and ill be good. I am not looking forward to reading Shakespeare because i find it extremely boring.

  13. The first term of this year went pretty well. I’ve been getting good grades, and we don’t get that much homework, which is good. English is one of my favorite subjects because we are advanced in technology, and I’m not as bored as I usually would be in an ordinary English class. Mr.Katz finds a way to make the class interesting for us. He gives us in class assignments that entertain us while educating us. We work in pairs of two’s, which I think is great because everyone gets to know one another. I also enjoy to writing my blogs on Mondays and Wednesdays. I think that for the next 2 terms, I should participate more, and work harder on my “hamburger questions”. I’m looking forward to achieving my goals to becoming a better student in English.

  14. To be completely honest term one went pretty well for me, I mean there were some areas where I was struggling but overall i think I have been doing pretty good in all my classes. I also believe term one was a good term for me because I met a lot of new/nice people and some I have became pretty close with. Some things I probably need to work on would have to be organization sometimes I feel like im not organized enough thus leading me to giving stuff in late etc. Overall this term went better then expected but I think I could fix a few things and do much better next term - Dennis Mayuga

  15. I found that this first term was really tough since teachers bombarded us with projects and tests. For three weeks, in a row, I had a test/project due everyday. I remember one day I had 3 tests and two projects due. Not only was I stuck studying all night, some of my teachers still gave us a **** ton of homework. My grades were okay. They did probably go down compared to my first two years. My classes in school have been really fun, but when I got home, it was always hell. Thank god its over and I hope that my teachers will calm themselves this term.

    1. I agree. We've gotten so many tests and projects this term! I didn't think we would be getting so many so early in the year, plus the amount of homework made it twice as hard.

    2. I agree with what you said, I remember for a whole week straight, I had to stay after school for like 5 different projects which was hell!

  16. So far, I think i have been doing relatively well this term because my marks are pretty high in math which i have never been good at. I am doing better than i have in the past in every subject except french which has always been my worst subject. From now until the end of the year i will work harder towards getting better grades in french because i am getting a tutor. But i have definitely improved my marks this year and hope to improve even more in term 2 and term 3.

  17. I think that this term has gone pretty well for me. I have not got in any trouble and my marks are not that bad so far. I think that I could do better in a few of my classes if I studied harder. So far my favorite class is English, mostly because we have such a great teacher. During the beginning of term one in French my marks were not that great but towards the end of the term I pulled of a 95 and two 80’s. The only thing I do not like about the first term is that, there is so much homework.

  18. This term, I think I did well in subjects and not so well in others. I definitely feel that my marks are lower this year in some subjects compared to the last two years. I did enjoy the topics I learned in my subjects this term. My favourite topics were in Science, English and Pop. There are also some subjects that I did not enjoy as much such as history and math, which are not my strongest. For term two and three, I think that there are things I can improve on. For example, I can probably start studying for tests earlier than I normally do and I can start my five drawings for art class sooner rather than later. I should also do my homework earlier after school because I usually start late and end right before I go to bed. There are definitely a few things I can improve on for the next two terms.

    1. I agree with you that the subjects that I enjoy more are the ones I do better in. And I am also not very good in history and math. Good luck in term two and three!

  19. So far in this school year I think I’m doing pretty good, depending on the class. I definitely did way better in grade 7 and 8 and I find this year a bigger challenge. I’m doing well in English, French, drama, pop and gym because those are more fun and interesting classes. I am getting really good marks and I like all my teachers. But for science, history and math, I am not enjoying it at all. In history I can barely pay attention because it is so boring. In math I do all my homework yet I still get bad marks and science I don’t even know what’s going on there. I think for term two I can improve on paying attention more in some of my classes, study a lot more and not procrastinate as much.

  20. This term I feel that I did overall pretty well, in all of my classes. My best classes were French, Pop, Drama and History. I am doing way better then I was last year and probably about the same as in grade 7, if not better. Next term I really want to work harder in Science and Math because they are so important and I feel that I could do better! I desperatly want to work harder in these two subjects because I want to get into Advanced Math and Science next year.

  21. I think that this term went really well because we did so many fun activities like the trailer and using chrome books all the time. The only thing I personally don't like are the writings we do almost every class even though they're easy marks. I just get tired of writing about the books we read and the ones about love. In my other classes, I think for some of them I'm doing well and other classes I'm doing bad and I just hate it. For example, I hate history, it's boring and I'm doing terrible but other than that, term 1 went really well!

  22. For my first term I don’t think that I did as well as could have; I’ve missed multiple blogs and I need to concentrate in class more. For the second term I want to make an effort to write every blog and pay attention in class more. To write my blogs on time I’m going to try to finish them the day that they are posted. And I’m just going to listen more in class to concentrate more.

  23. I think that this term so far, went good but I've been falling asleep in some of my classes because it is very boring like in history and french. even getting more sleep doesn't help because the classes are just impossible to stay awake in. Some problems I've had this term are studying and finishing blogs. i always forget to write them on time. I'll try to remember to finish them and to study and pay attention more in classes because i know it will be important for mid terms and tests.

  24. For me this term was pretty much alright and I like a lot of my teachers and classes. But there are a couple of things that I definitely need to work on for good grades in the next two terms. One of them is studying which for me is the worst thing ever! Although I wont get the best grades without it therefore I need to improve my study habits and not watch netflix all the time. Another thing is I need to be more focused in some of my classes (history) because I tend to day dream then miss half the lesson she explains to us. Then I get really bad marks on tests and quizzes so thats another one of my goals for the rest of the year. Even though I need to improve on some things, there were positive things that came out of this term and not only my teachers and classes but the new people I got to meet and talk more with. Last year, the new friends that I have today, I never talked to them once last year so I'm glad I could meet them and be friends with them. Overall, this term to me was somewhat of a success and hopefully the rest of the terms are better.

  25. I think that I did pretty good overall in term one. I had trouble following a schedule and getting out of the summer mindset. I had to realize that I couldn't hang out with friends whenever and that I had to do homework, sadly. The next two terms I am really going to try to be a lot more organized! I have to do a project at least two days before it's due this term! I also have to study for a test at least two days before the test. Overall I have to organize my time better and prioritize my life! I am excited for term two because I love a fresh start! By:Meghan McCarthy
