Blog 29 - Monday, January 29, 2015

The National Hockey League (NHL) held its annual All-Star game and skills competition this weekend in Columbus, Ohio.

This event is mostly for the fans to see their favorite players show off some of their skills.

What is a skill you could show off?

Here are your options:
1) You could write about a skill that you have. Explain how you acquired that specific skill?
2) You could share a video of you performing that skill with a brief explanation of how you acquired that skill (all on video).

Good Luck!

  1. One skill that I a very proud of and took lots of practice for me to acquire, is the ability to pack efficiently and in an organized way. I have loved packing for trips ever since I was little because it gives me the same feeling of excitement that you get right as the plane takes of the ground. I begin to think about what I will be doing on the trip and I have some control over what happens to me. As I said I have always loved packing but when I turned about 10 I got really into making lists and different sections for things to go into. I rarely forget things when I go on vacation so this is a really useful skill to have. However I don’t pack up very well at the end of the trip and stuff tends to be shoved into my bag. What can I say, before the trip is so much better than after!

  2. One skill that i am very proud of is my organisation skills. When i was little, i always kept my things very organised in a specific way. As i got older and got my own room, it was always so clean and nothing was missplaced. Whenever someone moved something, i use to get very frustrated and organise it again. Especially nowadays, i probably organise my room twice a week and my family is starting to think i actually have ocd because im the only one in my entire family who likes things kept a certain way. But honestly, i love that i have this skill because it helps me especially in school where i have a locker and so many classes to be catching up with all the time. If i wasnt organised i probably would be a mess with school work and my own time management.

    1. I couldn't agree more. I love having my things neat and clean and I totally agree that life is far less frustrating that way!

    2. I am the opposite of that.. I am not organized and I don't mind being messy!

    3. I agree with you 100%. Having things kept organized and neat is amazing. You feel cleaner and you don't have any trouble finding anything that you lost.

  3. I have many skills because I am very talented. One skill that I have, that is very weird but fun, is that I can put my foot behind my head. I can also, touch my head to my knees when they are straight and touch the floor with my palms when my knees are straight. I don't even know why I can do these things, it's kind of weird because I'm not extremely flexible, I can almost do the splits. I like having this fun skill because it is easy to stretch when other people are struggling. Also, putting my leg behind my head is something that most people can't do and it is fun to gross people out. That was just one of my very weird skills.

    1. You are so lucky! I am really surprised that you are not extremely flexible because those skills are pretty hard to do.

  4. One kind of silly skill that I possess is that I am very good a untying knots. Shoe laces, hair ties, hoodie strings, you name it and I can fix it. The specific momment that I acquired this skill is unknown, although I think that since I have long fingers and abnorally small palms I was bound to develop the skill at some point. I seriously underestimated how convenient and helpful this skill could be. I have come to my own rescue countless times before and after a soccer game and I was suprising able to come through for others aswell. I actually enjoy having this skill because, it may sound funny but I have actually been able to help quit a few people thanks to it. Overall, being able to untie a knot seems like a usless skill but don't understimate the good it can actually do. If you possess this talent, my advice to you is to remember that great power comes with great responsibility, keep doing good.

    1. Untying knots is the greatest thing I have ever heard! I don't know how many necklaces I've thrown out because they were tangled!

  5. One skill I have is giving advice. Well I think I do, considering all of my friends ask me for some, and why would you ask somebody for advice if they are not good at giving it away. I don't really know how I got this skill, but I think it has something to do with my sister and my mom. When my sister has any sort of problems, she usually tells me and my mom. This has been going on for as long as I can remember, and even if I didn't have anything to say about my sister's problem, my mom would always give her great advice. I think that just listening to what had happened to my sister and hearing my moms tone of voice, and her body language, and whatever she had to say back helped me turn into to an advice-giving person. I give some quality advice to my friends, so if you ever have a problem, I could maybe help you fix it.

  6. A skill that I have is dancing. I've always been a good dancer and when I was younger I would make up dances and moves on the spot. My family would always tell me I was so good and I should take dance professionally. I eventually started taking classes twice a week. I really enjoy dancing and the more I practise the better I get at doing the moves and remembering harder routines. I think it's something I will stick with for a long time and hopefully I become better at this skill.

  7. One skill that I have is working with tools. Ever since I was 18 months old, I have been using drills, saws, hammers etc... My grandfather who is very handy taught me how to use them and ever since he taught me, I have used my skill to help him and others. I really enjoy doing construction because I love to build things. My creative side goes to work when I am presented with tools and some materials to work with, not when I'm in art class.

  8. One skill that I am very proud of and will come in handy in the future is, being able to build stuff. Ever since I was young I would always build things, I did not always have the greatest materials to work with but i ended up still making amazing things. Two of my favourite things that I have made were, a ping pong table out of plywood and a nail gun and a longboard made out of multiple pieces of thin wood, heavy duty glue and clamps. My favourite thing that I made was not my best object ever made but it has the most sentimental value, it was a bench i made with my grandfather.

  9. One skill that I have acquired over my 14 years of living is the ability to throw fishy crackers and grapes high into the air and catch them with my mouth. Ever since my friend bet me a dollar in grade 3 that I couldn't do 15 in a row I have had this mind blowing skill. Well, let’s just say I won that dollar and many more over the years. I don't know why I have that skill. I have upgraded from throwing it to my sister throwing the grapes across the room. I am just so frickin skilled. It’s stupid, but I am kind of proud of it.

  10. One cool skill that i have is that i am an amazing mountain biker. I am also really good on a bmx bike, I am talented with everything that involves a bicycle basically. A couple of skills you need to be an all around good mountain biker is that you have to have extremely good balance, without that it will be difficult for you to stay on two wheels. You can't crack under pressure because that will lead to serious injury. You have to be able to make the right decisions, and you have to make them fast. The last thing is that you definitely cannot be scared, that will just cause you to make mistakes and possibly crash. A lot of people say that I am better off on a bike then i am walking which is possibly true because pretty much anywhere you can walk i can do the exact same thing on a bike. Whether its going up or down the stairs or over rocks i got it covered on a bike. I acquired this skill just by practicing for hundreds and thousands of hours until i nailed the mountain or trick perfectly. I usually practice on this small mountain near my house where there are many obstacles for me to practice. The last tricks that i mastered was very difficult and i recommend someone else being there like a spotter to help you. I called it the rock staircase. Its basically rocks in the form of a staircase and i'm at the top balancing on my back tire and i literally jump down each stair one by one while balancing on the back wheel until i get to the bottom. Whatever happens do not loosen your grip on those rear brakes!

  11. One skill that I have is tying complicated knots. As a sailor, you need to know your knots. I do this pretty often in class with the ropes that I have on my sweaters. I love tying knots like the simple bowline all the way to spending two hours making a monkey fist ( makes a ball of rope that is very solid ). I acquired this skill at sailing and it is the only thing related to sailing that I can do during the winter. I also enjoy making bets with my friends that they will not be able to untie the knot I will do. My friends will usually accept because how hard can it be to undo a knot? But most of the time I do some complicated thing and they can never do it.

  12. I've been playing piano since i was 4 or 5 years old. I've always had a natural talent for piano playing. My grandfather is a piano player and my dad is very musical also (he is in a band). I grew up listening to all kinds of music and my dad bought a keyboard for my sisters and I when we were very young. He taught me how to play notes but he does not play piano so the rest was up to me. When i was about 7 or 8 i started looking up piano tutorials on youtube and that's when i really started getting into playing piano. Then when i was 10 i started taking piano lessons. I continued taking lessons for another two years but when i started highschool i stopped. I must admit i play a lot less then i used to but i occasionally practice. I absolutely love playing piano. So in conclusion, i think i got my skills for playing piano from my dad, from practice and also from taking lessons.

  14. Since I was little I’ve always liked to cook. I don’t do it all the time, but when I do I enjoy myself and I’m good at it. I remember looking at my parents when I was younger and being so amazed about how they made all of these different things from scratch. I like to make desserts more then anything else because I have a very big sweet tooth. Cooking is very big in my dad’s side of the family. My grandparents cook all of their own meals and have some recipes that have been in our family for generations. So I probably get the skill from them. Although I have screwed up a few times, the things I make always end up pretty good.

  16. One skill that I possess is playing tennis. I have been playing tennis since I was 10 or 11 years old. I had started playing because my cousin and my uncle had been playing for a while and my mother wanted me to play. I acquired this skill through much practice and coaching. Every year I play tennis throughout the seasons, from fall to spring I play once or twice a week and in the summer, I play for 2 to 3 weeks all through the week. I love playing tennis it is so fun. This skill was acquired through training, coaching and the desire to improve

  17. One skill that I have, is being able to play the guitar. I've been playing for about 6 months now and I'm already playing songs that are made for professionals to play. People say that I have the ear for music and that I get it from my dad. My dad and I both learned our instruments by ear or by looking up videos. We don't read notes or music. We can easily learn any song on an instrument within 5 minutes. I'm really glad that I have this skill. I decided that I wanted to play guitar after listening to my favourite band. I listened to their songs and to how the guitar sounded so amazing. That's when I told myself that I wanted to learn how to play the guitar. I quickly grabbed my guitar, looked up the song and immediately bean playing. Thanks to my favourite band, I am able to play the guitar.

  18. One skill that I have is that I would say I am a pretty good baker. I bake all the time, and I never get tired of it. I think I started baking alone when I was in grade 5 and instantly fell in love with this hobby. I even remember baking for the first time and I was so proud of myself. I had made lemon squares and showed them off to my brothers and parents. I remember that I kept baking lemon squares and nothing else, but I’m not sure why. I then started making cookies, brownies and eventually, mini apple pies. I would call myself the baker of the family because whenever my brothers try to bake, I always somehow get involved whether it’s them asking me questions or needing my help. Baking is a fun pastime, but also relieves stress. I do it when I’m bored or if I need to find an activity to do with a friend.

  19. One skill I was proud of were my skills in diving. I use to dive all the time, most of my free time was spent at the pool. I use to practice four times a week for two hours and on my free time. Then one day I decided to do competitions. I was really good, I won every single competition, coming in first every time felt great. Then one day I was trying out new positions on higher boards. I was really nervous. It was the end of the day and I wanted to try and do a 1.5 back flip with a 0.5 spin in the tuck position. As I jumped off the board, I flipped too quickly, which caused me to smack my face right against the hard board. I immediately blacked out and I remember waking up maybe 15 seconds later at the bottom of the pool, I was bleeding a lot. All to say I no longer dive but I really enjoyed doing it and it made me feel proud of myself.

  20. One skill i posses is the ability to have a routine and stick with it. I have always been this way and hopefully always will be. I am talking about the kinds of routines such as working out certain days of the week, waking up at certain times, going to bed at certain times and doing my homework right when i get home from school. These may seem like easy tasks but many people struggle with them. My parents told me i have been like this ever since i was 3. I am also the kind of person who likes routine so this skill comes in handy. I feel like routines make me feel at ease and comfortable.

  21. My skill is apparently being very handy. I inherited this skill form my mom and not my dad. My mom bought this house about a year and a half ago. It was a very out dated house and carpet was everywhere. We had to take all the carpet off of the floor and install the wooden floor down. For most people it would be very challenging but for my mom and I, it was a piece of cake! We also had to build the island to go in the middle of the kitchen. There were three parts to the island two small parts and the big part. My mom told me to do the middle part all by myself. I had finished and had to help my sister finish the other half of the other small part. With a little bit of practice I hope I will be able to tackle anything.

  22. I possess quite a few skills, but the one I’m going to talk about is my knowledge in emotions and psychology. I am able to tell when something is bothering someone or they are feeling happy, without having to ask them, either by the way they are acting or their body language. I can also give great advice to the people that need it. My brother is studying in psychology so that’s why I know a lot about the subject, but I've always been interested in other people’s lives and feelings and helping them find ways to solve their problems. Whenever my friends need to talk to me about something, I turn into a psychologist. When I’m older I might want to be one, or a therapist and that’s why I’m so interested in the subject.

  23. One skill that I have acquired throughout the years, is building fires. Whether it's build a campfire in the summer or one in my fireplace at home, I'm always the designated builder. I have always been attracted the flames and the way the dance about. My dad was the one to teach me to build fires at home and how the air circulation works in the fireplace but when it comes to camping, I've learnt everything rom my mom. I've been making fires since I was very young. When i watch TV i always sit by the fireplace on the floor. My mom was never the happiest about this but she gave up trying to drag me away from the warmth. At camp I love building fires. I can even build them using flint. This one time we had to build fires at camp to make our lunch but it was a really windy day and it had rained the night before. I still managed to build a fire using wet wet on top of a windy hill, using only birch bark and flint to start it. Another time at camp, we had a competition to see who would be the first to burn a rope that was strung between two trees 4 feet off the ground. I won by building a really tall tipi fire. I will always enjoy building fires even if I get burnt which has happened on multiple occasions.

  25. One skill of mine that is a little strange is that I can crack walnuts open with my bare hands. I don't need a nutcracker to open them just my hands whenever I eat them. My grandfather taught me how when I was younger, when he first taught me i couldn't do it because my hands weren't the powerful clamps that they are now.

  26. One skill that I have is the ability to ride a bike. Yes a bike, but I didn't say how many kinds of bikes I can ride/race with. Before I say what I do, first it all started with my dad being a professional mountain bike rider, who was a really good racer too, and I mean really good. So, when I started bike was when I was about 4 to 5 years old. Then when I was 7 years old I decided to start racing bikes, but it wasn't like the road racing races, like the Tour De France or something like that, I started by racing BMX bikes first. Yes BMX racing was the first kind of racing I did in my life, and BMX racing is on dirt bikes without the motors on the dirt tracks. Then when I moved from Chicago to here, I decided to take at least a year off BMX racing, but that didn't really work out since my dad only found BMX races that were in Vermont. About two years after we moved in 2008, my dad decided to put me on a road racing team in Laval. After being on the Laval team for a year my dad didn't really like how they were organized, so he decided to be the founder of the first West Island cycling club, Club Lac St. Louis. The other kind of bikes that I ride are mountain bikes, which I don't race, and single gear bikes, which I don't race with either but I also find them the hardest kinds bikes to ride, besides unicycles. The first time I ever rode a single gear bike was when I went up somewhere up north to a place that had a Vélo Dome, which is in the Olympics where the riders ride their bikes on the walls in a bowl basically, and fun fact one of the coaches was the official Olympic Canadian coach for the riders on the team. While I was on doing a little mini race with my other teammates, the coach actually came up to my dad, not knowing he was my dad, he told him that one of my teammates and I were the most natural cyclists out of everyone else and were already making a good impression on him to recruit us for his team, but that wouldn't of worked out since I lost my passion for the sport and now just have a passion for Baseball and hockey. That's one out of many skills that I have.

  27. My skill would have to be my Netflix binge watching skills. Every day when I get home from school I quickly finish whatever I have for homework, then the marathon begins. I can watch episode after episode without getting bored. I've watched whole seasons in the span of a weekend. My friend once told me that she thinks that I can some how watch Netflix faster than her. Just because I finish so many shows in so little time. I have no idea what I did with my life before Netflix but I love watching it now that I can.

  29. I don't have many skills but I do have one that I am proud of! I am really good at reading people's emotions.I can tell when someone is feeling sad or when something is bothering them and I can usually help. A lot of my friends come to me for advice because I think that I am pretty good at reading a situation and telling them how the other person might feel and helping them feel better. I love that I'm able to help my friends but it makes me sad when I know something is wrong but they don't want to talk about it. In the end they always open up and I can usually help them solve their problems. I love helping people so I am very proud of this skill. I might not be great at dancing or singing or art but I think that I am really great with people!
