Having a sister is really hard! Unusually when one gets something the other wants it also and in the same proportion. Whenever my sister or I complain about things being unfair or unjust, (which is a lot) my dad will always say, “life’s not fair, but it’s good”. This annoys me to no end because instead of equalizing things he does nothing. He tells us that people will get more of some stuff in life, but in the end it will all add up the same. I guess he does have a point though, because in the real world life really isn’t fair. As a grown up you have to learn to accept that and I am glad that he is trying to prepare us for the future.
My dad, a huge rock and roll lover, has one particular line that was inspired by a Rolling Stones song. “You can’t always get what you want”, he says sometimes when my brother or I ask for something, and when he replies no, we ask why, and that’s usually his response. Not only does it irritate me, but on top of that, he even sings those words sometimes, which leads to some serious eye rolling on my part. I guess it works considering every time he says it, my brother and I leave, forgetting whatever we had originally asked. It just annoys us so much when he does it. To be fair, I suppose it’s good for him to teach us that not everything you want will be handed to you in life, and I am thankful for learning that lesson, however it’s just the manner in which he taught us that I could live without. Overall, this one liner said/sung by my dad is an annoying one, but it’s an important one too.
The famous one liner in my house is "It's a good thing you're pretty". My dad is usually the one to say it and when he does, everyone is a target just waiting to be hit. The worst part is that he likes to implement it when you've done or said something really stupid. How do you come back from that? It's like he just does it to rub it in with the help of a snarky comment. The super annoying thing is that the only moral that comes to mind for this one liner is don't let dad catch you doing something stupid. I love my dad but I don't always love his semi condesending ways. As much as I hate this one liner, I can't wait to use it on him some day.
One line my dad would always saw is "hey, how about you split that?" We make fun of him all the time because once when we were about 10 and 11 years old, we got home from school a bit late because we had an appointment. My dad was sitting reading the newspaper and we came in and went to go eat some of those bear cookies that come in the little bags. My dad comes in and is like "hey guys why don't you split that three ways?" We told him that would only give us three each and he said "Yeah That's enough" we started laughing and were asking him if he was crazy or something. He looked confused and I told him that mom gave Ella (who was about 2 or 3 years old) five cookies and we were only getting three. Now whenever we go to eat something and my dad is in the room we saw things like "why don't we split this banana 4 ways" or things like that to make fun of him. Grace
We'll be sitting together at the dinner table talking and my sister and I will find some reason to insult my little brother. He is super sensitive and always complains whenever we insult him. So my mom tells us "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. Recently my sister decided to change up the words that my mom says. So whenever she starts to say the line my sister interrupts her and instead of "don't say anything at all" she says tell me. Every time she says that my brother laughs because for some weird reason he finds it hilarious. Whenever my mom actually finishes saying it properly I just roll my eyes. And sometimes she will just roll her eyes back at me.
I don't remember any famous lines that my parents would say but my mom would say this to me a lot "Let's play the quiet game! Who can stay quiet the longest". It came from the movie UP. The little chubby boy named Russell in the story would talk non stop and then that line came up which his mom would say to him. For a long time after my mom would say that to me. I've always been someone who gets hyper a lot, go crazy randomly and get bored really easily. Whenever I was acting annoying, she would say that. I knew it was a joke though because she would laugh right after. Surprisingly I would usually just laugh along because it was a funny inside joke we had together.
There are SO many one liners that my parents say every single day. But one that they repeat the most often, is "money doesn't grow on trees". This bothers me because technically money does grow on trees, because money is made out of paper, and paper is made from trees. I always tell them this and then they say (another famous one liner), "Don't talk back to me". This bothers me even more because I am not trying to talk back with them, I'm just trying to have a conversation and make them smarter with my knowledge! I usually take advantage of my parents when it comes to money however, so I guess you could say I deserve it...
A famous one liner in my house that always gets me SO annoyed, is "What's with the attitude". This drives me crazy. I understand that sometimes, I may give some attitude to my parents, but what teen doesn't? I don't do it all the time though, I contain myself well, unless I'm really upset about something. Sometimes, all it takes for me to receive that famous line, is sigh. It takes just one breath for me to get penalized. "What's with the attitude?" "It's not attitude if I'm just breathing" is what I always say. They take everything I do, every movement I make, as attitude. They usually do this when they're in a bad mood, but still, be a little more understanding.
Having syblings is really tough especially when your the oldest. My parents are always telling me "You are the oldest, set a good example for your syblings." This really bothers me because I don't want that responsibility. I never signed up to be a role model. I've told them this many times but they never listen. I have to look out for them, and always make sure that there okay. Since Im a role model my parents are always watching me. They make sure I behave and get good grades. Its annoying.
"When I was a kid in India I had nothing, you have everything!". This is a line my mother uses ALL THE TIME! She likes to think that her childhood was miserable and that we are filthy rich spoild brats who do nothing with their lives, when that is obviously not the case! I consider myself to be an excellent help around the house, whether its babysitting my two sibblings every day and night, helping them with their homework, making supper, doing dishes, doing the laundry etc. I think I do a good job as a big sister! The worst part is when my mom decides to compare the smallest thing I do, like complaining when she asks me to refill the dishwasher for third time that day, to her tragic childhood! "I had nothing! My sister and I had to buy our mom a dishwasher with our savings, while you sit here complaining like a spoiled brat!" she would say. My dad on the other hand lived here in Montreal and had more of a normal childhood. His common phrase is "Put that phone away!". He'll say it even when I haven't even turned it on! He thinks I have an addiction when I am one of the few kids my age that aren't addicted to it! What bothers him the most though, is when I'm texting in the car. He'll get mad and say "Don't you think I want to text? Well I can't I'm driving! All I can do is talk! So put that phone away and talk to me!"

In Star Wars language padawan means student. So if you dont understand something they teach it to you as if you were there student. Me and my dad are obsessed... :)
"Things don't get done by themselves". I dont know how many times I've heard that line from my parents and its not just one line, they say that exact same thing for anything! Some examples: "the dishes won't do themselves, they don't grow legs and walk away" and many others. Its really annoying when they say that because obviously it wont get done by themselves and they dont keep having to say that same line over and over again. Whenever they say it, my reaction is always the same. I always get really annoyed and just say dont worry they will get done. But I know that when im older and have kids, im going to use the exact same lines.
Something that is said a lot by my parents is “what the heck?!” and “shit de merde!” (excuse my language). Lets just say that my family can be a little bit clumsy and slow at catching on to things, so these two sayings come in handy quite a bit. The second sentence is actually a perfect description of how we speak; half french and half english. We will not have one conversation that is completely one language. I actually like it that way, it adds some variety to the normal day to day conversations we have. As for the first sentence, they use it for pretty much anything. Whether it’s because they have nothing better to say, or they have no idea what my brother and I are doing, they use it all the time. I don’t really know why but I like it. It’s cool to me.
I have the exact same dynamic with my family when it comes to speaking french/english. Its definitely true that speaking bilingualy adds variety to a conversation!
“Matthew!.....lose the attitude ok?! Ohh no not again, that is the sound that both my parents make when I probably have an attitude. I cannot tell you how many times i’ve heard this line before. I guess the reason why I hear it so often could possibly be because I tend to make my opinion verbal a lot of the time when I’m in a bad situation that I don’t agree with. I understand I am only a part of the problem and I could probably limit the times they say this line just by not have as much of an attitude.
"It's your brother's turn now" said my dad for the thousandth time. Honestly having a younger sibling can get extremely annoying, especially when they always get their way when they want it. Me, I like playing video games with my friends alone, but when it comes to my brother he always wants to get involved. So, he runs to my dad and says that I've been playing for too long, for example 20-30 minutes, then my dad says it's my brother's turn to do what he wants with the TV even though he is always on the TV watching his shows or beating my games without me, etc.... The most annoying part is when I get off my microphone to tell my dad I'll let him do what he wants in 30 minutes for the rest of the night. Then after winning my compromise my brother is just outside the door getting ready to run to turn the Xbox off, just because he didn't get his way right away which gets super annoying. Then after i literally play at least one game in quiet, since my brother wouldn't stop annoying me, my dad says it, the one sentence that started it all "It's your brother's turn now".
One line that I hear my mom say all the time is “Too much sugar!” Whenever I ask her to buy snacks for us kids for lunches, she will examine the nutritional facts and then say “There’s too much sugar!” I will try to argue about it and show examples of snacks that have even more sugar ad tell her that in reality it is actually not that bad. She also says this when I ask her to buy my favourite cereal Lucky Charms. It’s not that she never gets anything with sugar in it, but if there is too much she usually won’t. My mom also says her famous line when I bake something. She will read the ingredients and tell me that there is too much sugar but I usually make it anyway or just cut down on the sugar. Lately it has not really been a problem because I am trying to eat healthier but I still like to have my Lucky Charms or Oreo's once in a while.
The most common one liner from my mom that I hear in my house is "Watch your tone". What does that even mean? Since when is their a specific tone in my voice that is more rude than the other. When we are in an argument and she would get mad, she would just report that damn phrase over and over again. The worst part is, she sometimes tells me that the tone that I used in my text message was wrong. What the heck? How does a text message have a tone? It does not even make sense. This @!%& drives me insane! Why not just say "watch what you are saying". Its just the tone of my voice that is wrong apparently.
My parents don't often use one liners. Maybe it's because I'm an angel child, but you never really know. I guess the most common thing they would say is that "do you know how hard I work for this money". I personally love to shop, but it's not like I go shopping every single week. Only a couple of times do I really ask them for money, so when they only give me 20$ to go shopping when I have no income, I feel a little bit ripped off. But if I ask for any more than they give me on the first try, they'll pull out the line. I know that my parents work hard for the money they earn, and giving it to me to go shopping is a waste, but they still don't have to make me feel bad about asking them for money, it's not like I can get a job at 14 and I will get a job as soon as possible.
"Watch your attitude missy". I have a lot of attitude. So, sometimes when I'm in a bad mood while speaking to my parents, I'll give them attitude. And I always get in trouble for it. My parents just always ask questions that are not necessary so i get annoyed. They also always repeat the same question so I just start giving attitude to them. I know that it's mean to give your parents attitude but it just happens without me trying to.
My mom is a Pre K teacher and has been for 26 years, she knows exactly what to say to a whining three year old to make them stop and god only knows that she used her tricks at home too. When my siblings and I were young we heard a number of one-liners from our mom and dad but one that sparks out from the rest was a line that my mom used to use when we would cry or whine; “Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about”. This one-liner definitely did the trick when my mom said it because she never lies and my siblings and I knew that all too well.
Something my parents always say is it takes two to tango. They say that when me and my sister are in a fight over something like the TV. They say that because when we fight it is both of our faults not just one of ours. So, It takes both of us to resolve the problem. I think this is a good saying because it is very true in many real life situations.
The one-liner that I hear the most often comes from my lovely mother. She always loves to tell me "suck it up princess"! She usually tells me to "suck it up princess"when I'm complaining about something or just being lazy and not doing what I'm asked. my response to this one liner is usually I know I'm your princess mommy but what do you want me to suck up? She usually gets very mad at this remark and then I get myself in more trouble but I get a lot of joy out of saying it. This one-liner does bother me but in the end she is still calling me her princess so I guess it's okay. I love my mom and I will always remember this famous one-liner.

That's such a cute story! It's funny how now it's an inside joke you all share.

I know that my parents work hard for the money they earn, and giving it to me to go shopping is a waste, but they still don't have to make me feel bad about asking them for money, it's not like I can get a job at 14 and I will get a job as soon as possible.
ReplyDelete"Watch your attitude missy".
ReplyDeleteYa, A LOT of attitude.
DeleteMy mom is a Pre K teacher and has been for 26 years, she knows exactly what to say to a whining three year old to make them stop and god only knows that she used her tricks at home too.
ReplyDeleteSomething my parents always say is it takes two to tango. They say that when me and my sister are in a fight over something like the TV. They say that because when we fight it is both of our faults not just one of ours. So, It takes both of us to resolve the problem. I think this is a good saying because it is very true in many real life situations.
ReplyDeleteMy parents always use this one liner one me and my siblings and I do think that it is very true aswell!
DeleteThe one-liner that I hear the most often comes from my lovely mother.
