Do you remember your first social media account?

What social media did you first start using and what did you use it for?

Are you still using that social media, or have you discovered newer and better ones? Explain.

  1. I can remember going on youtube from a pretty young age not that young because it was only created in 2005. I remember spending my time watching so many TV shows and stupid videos. Not that I don't do that now but, YouTube is so addicting because once you watch one video so many related videos pop up and you're instantly drawn to them. I've wasted so many hours on YouTube watching video after video not even realizing the time. Social medias of any sort are addicting and probably stupid but we love them anyways. I've been on many other social medias and they are all very time consuming. Over the years, YouTube is probably still my favorite social media and their are so many entertaining YouTubers and vlogers that enter you into their life and make you laugh. YouTube may be an addiction but it's entertaining and fun!!!!!!

  2. I got my first proper account for social media around grade 6, and I can still remember just how huge it was. Back in the time when I was in elementary school, Facebook was beginning to be a big deal. It seemed like everyone had it, and I too wanted to create my own account, but my parents were not so enthusiastic since my brother had just got his and he was 3 years older than me. They told me to wait until I was a bit older, which is almost impossible when you’re young, but I decided to unhappily do as I was told. By the time grade 6 rolled around, practically my entire grade had it and with sheer exasperation and seeing how perfectly safe it was, my parents finally let me make my own account! I was overjoyed. Before this moment, I had no means of communication with my friends other than my home phone and in person, so the fact that I could chat was so convenient. Also, at the end of the year when everyone was heading off to high school, I would still be able to keep in touch. Nowadays, Facebook isn’t as popular since more parents joined, so I’ve significantly reduced my time spent on the site and have since become more into a social media site called Pinterest. It’s not an extremely social site and I use it more for myself, but it’s so unique in its format that lets you find inspiration and make boards about anything you like. Social media has played a big role in my life for the past few years now and I imagine it will also in the future.

    1. I love Pinterest as well and I agree that it is a social media site that you can make not very social. I think that is the beauty of social media because you can decide how social that you want to be.

  3. My first social media account was Instagram way back in 2012. I was in grade 6 and I was still not aloud to have a Facebook account. I was so infatuated with it at first. I would post multiple pictures a day, just never at me because I was too afraid of stalkers and whatnot. I would post images of quotes, funny memes or really random stuff. I also used it as a way to connect with my friends that live close or far. Since I did not have a cell phone or any other type of social media, this was my only way to technologically communicate with my friends. As I got older I started to post less and less and as the selfie became popular I started to post those instead of what I did before. Nowadays I don’t use Instagram as much as I did before, I post on occasion, on average once a month. I use other social medias like Snapchat and Facebook much more frequently.

  4. My first-ever social media acount was Facebook. I made that account when I was around 11 or 12 years old. I had to convince my parents to let me get an account because they thought social media was bad in general. But I convinced them otherwise. I use Facebook to keep in touch with old friends and talk to new friends. I still use them for the same reasons today but I don't use it as much. Now I use social media such as Instagram, Snapchat and others. Overall, social media is way to express yourself and I love using them.

    1. It's good to keep in touch with old friends and I agree that Facebook helps do that. I also use the newer social media stuff like Instagram and snapchat because they are a lot more fun.

  5. My first social media was youtube. I have no clue when I started going on to youtube and watching different videos but I was pretty young. I still have my account now and I still use it quite a lot. When I discovered it I thought it was awesome, I could look up whatever videos I wanted and watch them instantly. I also loved how it gave a recommended list next to the video. I have discovered plenty of music through youtube, I type in a song I like and just go on the recommended list to hear more.

  6. The first type of social media I got was Facebook. In grade five I would always use my mom's Facebook account to play games. I would use it all the time and she never used it. So she let me change the name to my name instead of hers. People ended up saying happy birthday to me on the wrong day because my mom's birthday date was still there and it said I was married to my dad. So, I changed all the information on her account and it became mine. Later on I started posting stuff and going back and reading them is so embarrassing. What was I thinking? I still use Facebook today to mostly look at the feed and see if I have any notifications but I barely post stuff.

    1. Yeah I barely use my Facebook now either. I remember spending so much time trying to rebel against my parents by creating a Facebook account and signing in on my friends phones and stuff because it was so cool at the time, but now I realize that it totally wasn't worth it.

  7. My first ever social media account was this unheard of app called "TextNow". It was similar to the app "Textplus" but since for some reason it was rated 13+ I wasn't able to have it. My parents (my dad) are super strict and would only allow me on my iPod between the hours of 3:00-6:00. Yes, this meant 3 hours, if I was lucky with my favorite toy, that I happened to own. I convinced my two friends Olivia and Sarah to get the app on their iPods so we could all communicate outside of school. I was super excited when they agreed, created their own accounts and were able to text me between 3 and 6pm. As an 11 year old, I was completely astonished when my friends and I convinced practically the entire grade to get the app and create a group chat where the entire grade could text each other. At the time, it was the coolest thing ever, but now when I look back at it, I realize how lame it really was! I was only able to text on Wi-Fi, and only text that person if they had a "TextNow" account. If I was communicating now the same way that I was back then, I think I'd lose my mind.

  8. My first social media account was for a texting app called KIK, i'm sure many people have heard of this app before because it is still pretty popular. I was around 9 years old and I was at home looking at the app store and saw that this app was trending so I thought i would give it a try. My dad helped make an account and I felt so important because I had to create my first email as well, which was very exiting. I started to use it, talking to a bunch of elementary school friends with it, and as time went by it just got boring there was already so many better social media apps out there and frankly this one was one of the most useless. I just started gradually not using it and one day i deleted it. To this day i'm not the biggest social media user there is, there are so many people addicted to it and i really don't know what intrigues them about it. It did nothing for me so I am almost never on any of them.

  9. The first ever social media account that I got was in sec. 1 when I got Facebook. I got it mainly to get in contact with the friends that I had left in Vancouver a few years back when I moved here. But other than that, I didn’t really have any specific uses for it. Now that I have had Facebook for a few years I have stopped using it as much as I did before. I barely ever go on it because now that I have a phone I can just text those friends that I wanted to talk to. The social media apps that I use more now would be Pinterest and Instagram. I like looking at people’s pictures and looking at all of the cool things they have to offer on these sites. It’s funny to see how the use of certain things evolve over the years.

  10. My first social media was Facebook. I got my account when I was only 8. I didn't use it for anything interesting at all, my parents only let me because it really excited me. I was really happy because I guess I felt older using it even though I have only 4 friends which my my sister, parents and relatives because no one my age had it yet. Since then, I joined other social medias such as youtube, twitter and Instagram. From then until last year, Facebook was my favorite social media because everyone in our grade had one and it was very interesting. But now I find it really boring and like it's old news. I find twitter and Instagram a lot more amusing. My first social media was Facebook. I got my account when I was only 8. 12. Facebook like everyone else's was my first social media account also. I can remember the exact day I got it. It was grade 5 and a beautiful day outside. I had just gotten home from a day that seemed to have been so long. Everyone was talking about how cool Facebook was, and how many "friends" they had. I walked straight home that day and decided to get Facebook. I sat on my computer and typed it in. It was finally the moment... and I had no idea what to do. I then waited I long half hour for my sister to get home, and she had to teach me. Of course it was much easier than it looked, and we got it done in 2 minutes. I then finished my account by adding all of my friends, and adding a profile picture that I now regret and have deleted. Now, I would have to say that Twitter would be the account I use the most. I love to scroll through the feed, and see whats new.

  13. My first social media account I got was Facebook. I got it in grade 5 mainly to keep in touch with family and partly because everyone at school was talking about how "fun" it is. I really got into it, and now I check it everyday. I still keep in touch with family but now I use it more to see what people post and post pictures of my own. I also enjoy scrolling through my news feed to see what's there. I also have other social media accounts. I use Instagram, Snapchat and Tumblr.

  14. My first social media account was youtube. I made the account when I was in 2nd grade so that I could keep up to date with all the latest sports news. All my friends had these accounts and we would all watch the same channels and talk to each other through the comments section. When I used to get home from school, I would got to the computer and check my sub box to see what had been uploaded. I still use youtube daily to keep up to date with sports and whats going on in the world.

  15. The first social media account I got was Facebook. I used it for pleasure, and not for any good reason. All of my friends had it, and I felt left out. I also wanted to be able to message people; I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I am still using this social media, but I barely use it anymore. It is completely useless unless you use the "group chat", for projects or school stuff. This is the only reason I still have it. Meanwhile, I've discovered many new social medias like snapchat, Instagram and my newest discovery, Pinterest. Pinterest is probably the most addicting one because it has so many cool things on it. For example, I could type in any words, and pictures will show up no matter how strange the words are.

  16. The first social media account that I used was MSN. I do not remember having a particular reason for using this social media and I most likely just used it for fun. I remember in elementary school when everybody used MSN. I still remember my profile picture being Justin Bieber and so was my cousin’s. I used it to message my friends. I would message my cousin when she went to Florida in the winter and we would talk to each other for hours. I do not use this form of social media anymore because I stopped using it when I got Facebook in grade 6. At that point barely anybody used MSN in order to message people but rather used Facebook or Textplus. I now use Facebook as my primary source to message people online.

  17. My first ever online social media account was an email when I was in the 5th grade, on yahoo. I remember mainly using it for an email to email my friends when I would go on trips or if they would too, just to check up on one another. I also remember that I would use it for all my online game accounts. Now a days I still use it for everything I did and more, besides this Lester B. Pearson account which is used for contact between me and teachers, and sometimes class mates. That was my first online social media account.

  18. The first social media account that I got was facebook. I was in fifth grade and I pretty much used it for nothing. All the kids at my school had gotten it and I felt the need to get it. Once I got it, I was like, so what do I do know? The only thing I would use it for, is to ask someone about homework or a project. I would probably check it once a day for about 10 seconds because nobody ever posted anything. I still use facebook to this day and the only other one I have is youtube. I personally don't think any social media is better than facebook because it is the most used. Its like mcdonalds. It does not have the best stuff but it will never go out of popularity.

  19. The first social media I've ever gotten was facebook and I was in grade 6. I never used it for anything in particular. Everyone had facebook in my grade so I felt like I had to have it. Even when I got it, I never used it but I was always on it. Now, I use it only to talk to people if I don't have their phone number or if I forgot my homework and my friends send me pictures of it.

    1. That's what I use face book for now too! I find its a really easy way to contact people if you really need something and don't have their phone number. I also use it to talk to people who live far away so that way I avoid any roaming and long distance charges!

  20. I only got my first social media account when I first came to high school. It was Instagram. I got Instagram because 2 of my best friends at the time had it and they told me to get it also. They helped me set up my account and posted my first picture with me. Since then, I’ve joined more social media’s such as Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. When I first got Facebook, it was really fun and I got addicted to it and was on it 24/7 but now I find it really boring and I go on it like twice a week. Twitter I got at the beginning of sec 3 and I’d wanted it for a long time and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since I joined. At first when I got Snapchat, I had no clue how to use it and didn’t have many friends, so it was boring to be. But after a while I got more friends and it is to date one of my favourites. Instagram is also still one of my top choices too. I also use YouTube on a regular basis to listen to music or to watch funny videos.

  21. The first social media account I got, was twitter. I got it about three years ago, before I started high school. I remember how awkward it was at first, every time I wanted to tweet something, I didn't know what to say. It just felt so awkward. I got it mostly to just follow and get updates on my favorite celebrities. I was definitely obsessed with it, but then I discovered instagram. A friend had introduced me to it that same year, and I instantly fell in love with it. Seeing all the different beautiful pictures, it just seemed a lot less complicated and way simpler. I still love twitter, but instagram is my number one favorite.

  22. My first social media account that I ever got was Facebook. I got Facebook when I was in grade 5! I remember that I was begging my mom to get Facebook and my mom and dad were not going to let me get it because my sisters and brother only Got it in grade 7. I explain to them that all my friends had it and that I was going to be very responsible with it. I gave them my email address and password so that way they could log into my account! I was so excited. I would inbox my friends all the time because I didn't have cell phone. I would also Skype my friends using the Facebook video chat. I still use Facebook today but I have a new accountand I definitely do not use it as often. I usually just text people now and use Instagram.
