Growing up in the west island, I have always felt safe;  despite some of the horror stories that you hear.  I like to know that as my family continues to live in the west island that we all are "sheltered" and don't have to fear being attacked.

Do you feel that your neighborhood is safe?  What makes it safe?  What do you think needs to be done to make it safer?  Explain.

  1. I feel pretty safe in my neighborhood. There are a few sketchy neighbors but my other neighbors are old people and french people, so I don't really know them that much. I feel sometimes scared because I live near a park, lake and a small island on the lake that people like to party on and get drunk. I does scare me sometimes to hear in the news about bombings in malls, and shootings in schools, and robberies and hostages at home. It is scary to think that your own house might not be safe, and that anywhere you go something terrible could happen. There is a stop sign near my house that most people speed through so I do think their should be more police near my house and at my park to make our neighborhood safer. I believe everyone should feel safe in their own house and neighborhood, but that's sometimes not the case.

    1. Your right about living on an island being scary. I hate crossing over bridges whenever we leave Montreal!

  2. Personally I find that the West Island is one of the safest places in the world. It has such a wholesome environment and it is very family friendly. Compared to downtown, most of the buildings are nice and modern and there are far less people. There is also a fire station right around the corner from were I live, so that’s an added comfort. I can always see public security and police cars patrolling the roads. Although they may be annoying and give away some pretty unnecessary tickets, they are doing their job and keeping Pointe-Claire safe. There are a few things that could be done to make it even safer here in Pointe-Claire. I think that they should put in more speed bumps around school zones and on streets near parks since there are so many kids around. Also a few crossing guards on certain streets would be nice.

  3. Overall, in my neighbourhood of Beaconsfield, safety has never been a real concern of mine. It’s very rare that I come across a sketchy building that makes me feel unsafe, and having an absence of police sirens near my home reassures me that there is very little danger in my life. While I’ve heard stories of some violence in downtown Montreal, in the west island town of Beaconsfield, it’s practically unheard of. Not having any stress in this matter is very relaxing and I am very appreciative of it. There is however an intersection near my house that is in my opinion, disorganized. Because of poorly designed lights, sometimes cars get stuck on the train tracks and with an oncoming train, it could be extremely dangerous. I think that the entire layout of this crossing should be re-thought out in order to minimize the safety risks. Despite this, I feel that in general, my safety is not at risk in my neighbourhood.

    1. I agree with the lack of safety of that darn intersection!

    2. Do you live right next to me? That intersection is literally a minute from my house.

  4. I definitely find our neighborhood much safer than that of downtown Montreal. I believe that all the stores and homes have very good security systems and trusts the people in our community to do the right thing. I am not so threatened by my neighborhood because the homes are mostly filled with rich old people that stay inside all day except for the rare exception of going to McDonalds. I am sometimes worried of robbers stopping by around our neighborhood just because Dollard happens to have A LOT of HUGE houses that I'm sure contain a lot of valuable items. For example, one of my neighbours that lives a block away hs three garages, 2 car lifts, 6 cars, and has recently expanded his mansion. The neighbor two houses down from me is Joshua Perets who recently had his house demolished and rebuilt. Though my home might not have as much to offer, I fear being robbed because robbers might assume we have something of value living in between these people. Even though the neighborhood seems safe enough to bike around or to walk around in without being kidnapped, no place is truly safe, and there are still psychopaths lurking around.

    1. That's cool that you live in such a rich neighborhood. I think you should be less worried that there are people going to rob you if you have a good security system

  5. I must say that I feel pretty safe in my neighborhood, there are a lot of people around so if anything were to happen someone would see. I am not sure what happened but as of late there has been a steady stream of policemen patrolling the area and I must say that it definitely makes you feel safe. During the day, I feel very safe and comfortable although during the evening is another story. As soon as the sun goes down the strange people come out. In the morning the remanence of their smashed beer bottles and graffiti is found and I won’t lie I get a little freaked out, but as they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Overall I feel pretty comfortable in my neighborhood besides the occasional drunk guy or random stranger, it is nothing like downtown, that’s a whole other story…

  6. Honestly I don't really know if I feel safe or not in my neighborhood, and I'm not saying that because it's a sketchy neighborhood. I'm saying that because I've never really have been or seen anything in my neighbor hood that would make me feel not safe, but I also guess it's because I never in a great amount of thought into it. I guess, if I do think about yes I do feel safe, but that doesn't mean I am safe, because anyone can do anything any time they choose to. But, if there was a way to make it all feel a little safer, I believe that there could be more police patrols going around, or different routes that they could take, mainly on the side roads that a lot of people use, for example I live on Westminster, right in front of Wilder Penfield, and my street is pretty busy from around 3 to 6 and then there is always older people at night driving by and making a lot of noises. That's how I feel about my neighborhood.

  7. I do find my neighborhood very safe. A lot of my neighbors are nice families with usually a young kid. I also live near a park where a lot of kids play and when there are more people outside doing stuff it feels more homie. I find a lot of people in my neighborhood have dogs and you would always see people waling them. Even super late at night. You might thing it's scary because it's dark but there is always someone walking there dog and it makes me feel safe. There is one house that I always drive by. It's not necessarily near my house but I always pass through it when I am going home and there is a group of druggies always there and they stare at you when you drive by. I think there should be more police going around making sure there are less sketchy people in the west island doing weird things.

    1. I also live near a few parks and I love it! It is so nice to see kids having fun outside running around with their friends than have them glued to the T.V. or the iPad!

  8. I feel like my neighborhood is not safe at all, since we do not have many policeman and there is almost 0 precaution for stopping crimes. To make it safer, I feel like we need basic precautions like policemen who actually do stuff.Although, since we have nothing to be afraid of, my city seems safe since nothing never happened. Although, if some random person decided to go crazy, we would probably all be screwed. I feel like this does not only apply to my neighborhood, I feel like it applies to everybody also. Our society is so not safe compared to the States. For example people in Canada barely ever lock their doors. Although, I have to say that my neighborhood is technically safe because we do not have any mean or terrible people living here.

  9. I think that my neighbourhood is very safe. There has never been a time when I felt felt differently. Since I know most of my neighbours and I know quite a bit of people who live around my neighbourhood, I think it makes me feel safer because I know that if something were to happen people would see. Also in the summer everyone is always out and about doing their thing, so people would notice if something fishy was going on. Every now and then the Beaconsfield patrol drives around so I guess they could do that more, but overall I feel safe.

  10. My neighbourhood is very safe. I know so many of my neighbours and they are all so friendly and nice. I live near 2 parks and an elementary school so there is always kids running around. Living on a quiet street is also nice because there isn't much action or trouble going on. I have never really feared for my safety. I am always out on walks with my dog, talking to people as I go, letting them pet my dog or even introducing myself to a dog walker that I were to run into. I love my neighbourhood and I don't think there would be anything to make it much safer because there is usually Kirkland security or a police car checking in around the school making sure everything is safe for the kids near the school. In the end, I know that if anything were to happen, I would have all of my neighbours helping me out or protecting me because I know that we are always looking out for each other.

  11. My neighbourhood is not safe but not unsafe either. We have neighbours to go to if anything ever happens and the whole street knows each other by first name. I think it helps that we have an elementary school right across the street too, with crazy paranoid parents who think that their kids are going to get mugged. It all sounds pretty safe but when summers come around, I feel a little less safe. Once, me and my sister watched a drug deal go down right in front of the school, and there are always the occasional cop asking us if we saw anything suspicious while we were outside. Of course the answer would always be no. My neighbourhood is pretty normal though, and theres not much else you can do to "stop the crimes". I feel pretty safe because I've never known anything more safe.

  13. I feel that my meighborhood is pretty safe because there are a lot of people who are friendly who live near me. Except there was one time where a guy who lived down my street who got robbed right in front of my brothers eyes which was kind of scary but thankfully he moved out. Besides that one horror story, I think that my neighborhood is safe and I dont think anything should be changed.

  14. I think that I feel pretty safe in my neighborhood. Mainly because I know that I have really good neighbors who will help me out with anything that I need. At the same time, you still have to be cautious because there are bad people in every neighborhood. I also live on a street where there are almost no policemen or security patrols. I think I saw 1 police car in my whole life on my street and it was for some stupid reason.

  15. Growing up in my neighbourhood, I have always felt safe which is something I'm very grateful for. Almost all the people living in my neighbourhood are families with kids either younger, older or the same age as me. Down my street there’s an elementary school, a preschool and a park right next to them. Because of this, my street is quite busy on weekdays but extremely quiet on weekends and holidays. There is also a church really close to me. Having all these things make me feel as though I am a part of a community which has always made me feel very safe. I could take my dog out for a walk around the block at 10 pm and not have to think twice about it. I don’t really think there’s much more to do to make it any safer. There’s a police station a little more than 5 minutes away so if anything were to happen, it would get taken care of very quickly. I also feel like I am living in a safe community because I know all my neighbours and if, for example, there was an intruder in my house, I could just walk over to them and get help.

  16. I think my neighborhood is pretty safe. I have never heard any horror stories growing up here. Other than a break in to a house a few streets away from mine, but that doesn't scare me because I think that can happen to anyone. I have a lot of family and friends that live in the same neighborhood as I do, knowing I have people close by makes me feel safer. I live very close to an elementry school and there are three parks on my street, so their are always people walking, mostly families.

  17. personenally I do feel safe in my neighborhood. Part of the reason why is because police are very close by and I know most of the people around my house. I have never heard of any horror stories happening around where I live probably because most people or families of four and we never hear about that many horror stories happening because of a big family. I have many friends in my neighborhood and we all get along perfectly fine which is very comforting.

  19. I do personally feel safe in my neighborhood. All my neighbors are lovely people and we as a community watch out fro each other. I know that if something bad were to happen I could always count on them which really helps me feel safe in my neighborhood. When I first moved here I could already tell that this was going to be a safe neighborhood. I have never really heard any horror stories about anything bad happening in my neighborhood because the communities out here are really close nit and look out for each other.

  20. I feel and believe that my neighbourhood is safe for many reasons. I am kind of “isolated”. I live in Ile Bizard, which is a little island. I feel safe because I’m not really in a dangerous zone. Ile Bizard is known as a safe, family oriented place. What also helps me feel protected is the fact that I live in a deeper part of the island, therefore not many people would know how to get on the really long street that I live on. I also know all my neighbours. They are all very nice and sweet and we all look out for each other, so if there’s ever a problem, we can count on our neighbours to help out.

  21. I feel very safe in my neighborhood because I know that the house across from mine always has an open door for me. I also feel safe because barely any cars drive on my street because it is not very known. Two houses down from mine there is a family with a sign on their window and it's a sign where if anyone is ever in trouble you can go into their house and they will take care of you, it is called Parent-Secour. I feel very close with the people around me, I know my neighbors very well and I know that they will help me if ever I need their help.

  22. I personally feel very safe in my neighbourhood. i don't know if all neighbourhoods are like this but everyone in mine are all friends and we always talk and we chill out so i know that i am safe. Even if we don't really know the people that well, we still have small talk with others. I've never heard any scary stories about my neighbourhood, and i don't think there is any. But there has been some robberies but it was a long time ago so I'm not too scared!

  23. I feel very safe in my neighborhood. I always see kids running around or playing hockey on the streets. Also, I live near a soccer field and I sometimes play with kids that I do not even know. Just like any neighborhood, there are robberies here and there but it is definitely not common. I have always noticed security officers driving around the neighborhood patrolling and making sure everything is as it should be which makes me feel more comfortable. There is also a police and fire station very close to where I live therefore I know that if ever something is wrong, there will be people right around the block.

  24. I think my neighborhood is pretty safe. My family is relatively close to most of my neighbors which makes me feel safer and more connected to them. There are a lot of kids that live on my street so it should be a safe environment especially for them. But sometimes I do realise when I’m outside that some cars drive faster than they should. To fix this problem and make the streets safer, maybe they should put a speed bump to slow the cars down.

  25. I feel more or less safe in my neighborhood. There are a lot of kids here and there are two elementary schools near by. Of course there are those few sketchy neighbors who don't leave their house and never answer the door to raise Terry Fox money, but other than that it's relatively safe. There has never been any incidents nearby other than a robbery next door and one down the street. That's kind of random though. I don't really think there's much you can do to make a neighborhood safer. It's all about the people who leave near you and it's not like you can pick who your neighbors are.

Everyone knows each other and has gone too preschool through high school together! We also all go too the same summer pool which is right in our community. Everyone knows each other at the pool and looks out for each other. I know the older kids and adults because they taught me swimming lessons when I was younger! I also know all of the younger kids because I teach them too swimming lessons now! So everyone is friends and we all know each other so I feel very safe all the time in my beirghboor hood!!

  27. I personally feel pretty safe in my neighborhood. My neighborhood isn't exactly super busy so there's hardly ever any cars let alone police cars. I remember back in elementary school when I started walking home, my mom asked the retired couple who live a couple houses down to watch and make sure I got home safely. It's nice to know that I can rely on my neighbors.

When I see someone walk by me and its late, i know they don't plan to hurt me but I'm always aware. on the other hand, i never hear of anything dramatic that happens in Kirkland, but I'm scared ill talk too fast and something will so I'm always on alert. i trust the people around my house since I've seen them my whole life but I can never really trust anyone. I'm just a paranoid person i guess ill never feel safe.

I am pretty sure Pointe-Claire is very friendly, and fun. Sometimes I go out for late night walks, and I never see anyone suspicious lurking around which is reassuring. I trust a lot of people also.
